Mets rally to clip Nats behind six-run eighth

Baseball Betting Lines

05/11/2010 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Carter's first hit as a Met was a big one, driving in the go-ahead run during a six-run eighth, as New York rallied to down Washington, 8-6, in the middle contest of a three-game set.

Carter, acquired from Boston in the Billy Wagner trade last summer, made Tyler Clippard (6-1) a loser for the first time this season, doubling home Alex Cora during New York's rally in the eighth.

Raul Valdes (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless frame for the Mets, who snapped a two-game skid. Jeff Francoeur and Rod Barajas each drove in two runs in the victory.

Cristian Guzman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Adam Dunn hit a three-run home run and Ivan Rodriguez knocked in a pair of runs for the Nationals, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

The Nationals pounced on Mets starter Jon Niese for a three-spot in the first. Guzman started the scoring threat with a one-out walk and scampered to third on Ryan Zimmerman's base hit to left. Niese followed by using a hefty dose of fastballs on Dunn, missing with the first three. Dunn was granted a green light to excellent results, driving a fourth straight fastball over the wall in right for a 3-0 lead.

Niese induced a Zimmerman groundout with the bases full to end the second, then the home team inched closer. Francoeur's two-out single off Scott Olsen scored Jason Bay for a two-run deficit in the bottom of the inning.

The Nationals extended their lead by adding another three runs in the fifth. Again it was Guzman who kicked off the proceedings, driving a leadoff double past Angel Pagan in center. Zimmerman then walked and Josh Willingham worked a free pass to load the bases with one out. Rodriguez drove in a pair with a single to center and Ian Desmond greeted new pitcher Manny Acosta with a run- scoring single to left for a 6-1 edge.

Francoeur drove in David Wright with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but Washington still held control of the game.

It came unraveled in the bottom of the eighth.

Brian Bruney allowed a Bay single and Wright double before Ike Davis reached on Desmond's throwing error. Bay crossed home plate on the play for a 6-2 game, and Clippard entered from the bullpen. He struck out Francoeur, but Barajas put a charge into a high-and-inside pitch, driving it off the high wall in left for a two-run double and 6-4 game. Cora moved the catcher to third with his bunt single perfectly placed to the right of Clippard and Pagan stroked a game-tying single to right.

The right-hander Clippard could not stop the bleeding, allowing Carter's double down the right-field line, plating Cora with the go-ahead run. New pitcher Miguel Batista intentionally walked Jose Reyes then walked Bay to force in another run.

Game Notes

The Nationals were four games over .500 for the first time since 2005...Olsen gave up two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 5 1/3 frames. The southpaw was taken out after throwing just 82 pitches...Niese gave up six runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 frames.
